The Role of Aromatherapy in Massage

Aromatherapy is the use of plant-derived essential oils to influence the sensory experience of a space or treatment. In massage, that usually means a small amount of properly diluted essential oil is added to the session so scent becomes part of the experience rather than something separate from it.

What makes aromatherapy interesting is how directly scent can affect mood and memory. Smell has strong connections to parts of the brain involved in emotion, which is one reason a familiar scent can feel comforting almost instantly. Research has looked at aromatherapy for things like relaxation, stress, mood, and sleep, and while results vary, some people do find certain scents genuinely help them settle.

Different oils also create very different experiences. Citrus scents can feel bright and refreshing. Earthier scents may feel grounding. Lavender is widely associated with relaxation, and many people do find it calming, but not everyone responds the same way. For some people, lavender can feel stimulating, energizing, nostalgic, or simply not relaxing at all. Scent is personal.

That is why aromatherapy works best as a choice rather than a prescription.

At Zora, aromatherapy is included with every massage, but it is always optional. You can choose a scent that feels good to you, or keep your session completely unscented.
